St. Lawrence Market
The St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood is a family-friendly area with diverse and bustling residents. This former industrial area is bounded by Yonge, Front, and Parliament Streets, and the Canadian National Railway embankment. The Esplanade off Yonge St., lined with restaurants, cafés and hotels runs through the middle of the area and is a destination for both locals and tourists visiting Toronto.
The apartment buildings and townhouses in the St. Lawrence Market area were designed by some of Toronto’s most accomplished architects. The one consistent feature in these designs is the use of red brick exteriors on all the homes. Private and non-profit housing, market rental buildings, all co-exist here.
While many of the old industrial buildings along Front Street east of Jarvis have been demolished since the 1950s, several old industrial buildings remain, including old meat-packing plants from the 1800s. Several have been converted into beautiful lofts or commercial space.
In the last few years, the St. Lawrence Market real estate scene has seen the addition of new luxury glass and steel condo apartment buildings that proliferate throughout Toronto’s downtown core.
